Introduction
A short discussion on the available communication protocols related to the Melsec iQ-F FX5U PLC CPU.
It stands to reason that this CPU (just like any other CPU) supports a finite number, predefined communication protocols. More details are being given here.
Ethernet and Serial Based Communication Standards and the Communication Protocols applicable – CPU Built-in;
The FX5U PLC CPU – does support some built-in communication protocols – accommodated by its two communication ports, one being ethernet (RJ-45) and the other being serial (Terminals).
In connection to Melsec-iQ-F FX5U PLC built-in communication protocols – the following is applicable:
- Ethernet standard based communication. The recommended communication protocol would be CC-Link IE Field Basic, Modbus TCP, SLMP Communication (typically used for SCADA connection) and MC Protocol (Melsec Communication Protocol)
- Serial based communication (RS-422\RS-485 standards). The recommended communication protocol would be Modbus RTU and MC Protocol (Melsec Communication Protocol) (or inverter comms if it was a serial connection to FREQROL VFD).
More information can be attained as follows:
Ethernet and Serial Based Communication Standards and the Communication Protocols applicable – Expansion Options;
However, additional communication protocols may be required for interfacing with a foreign\3rd party device. For this, the Melsec iQ-F FX5 CPU can accommodate Expansion Options, which are add-on hardware components.
Hardware needs to be added in the forms of modules, boards, and adaptors (per THIS selection tool)

Some Limitations:
It must be pointed out that the Melsec iQ-F does not support:
- HART over 4-20mA Communication Protocol
- I/O Link Communication Protocol
