Introduction

This article is intended to provide the applicable user with some guidance in the interconnection of Melsec iQ-FX5U – and the GOT2000 via Ethernet communication medium. But first, some important disclaimers.

When it comes to inter-device communication – the communication establishment is not achieved via the interconnection of the hardware and following of a procedure. It is too common where users interconnect the hardware, follow a predefined procedure, and expect communication to commence. This is not how inter-device communication establishment works. Troubleshooting\Faultfinding is to be expected and therefore to be assumed to form part of the procedure. As such, in order to execute the prerequisite and expected troubleshooting\faultfinding, one needs to fully understand the particular communication protocol in terms of its functions and operation.

In short, there is no quick-fix short-cut available for inter-device communication connection (network establishment), in general for FA or Process Automation.

Now that this very important fact has been expressed, herewith the guidelines for the applicable hardware interconnection;

Preliminary information:

Interdevice communication will be Ethernet-based, in terms of the communication standard. The communication protocol will be MC Protocol (which is Mitsubishi Propriety). In both the PLC and the GOT, the applicable Ethernet (RJ-45) communication ports, would be found as the built-in ports.

The software applicable, will be GX Works3 for the FX5 PLC and GT Works3 for the GOT HMI. In particular, for the GOT HMI, GT Designer3 will be used. GT Designer3 is a component of GT Works3.

GT Designer3 – Controller Settings

The following is a breakdown of the Controller Settings (FX5) inside of GT Designer3.

GT Designer3 – Communication variables\details

The following is a breakdown of the Communication variables\details (FX5 and GOT HMI) inside of GT Designer3.
